Network Usage Policy

By using the Scuola Normale Superiore network, users agree to comply with the GARR Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), available on this page.

The Italian Research and Education Network, commonly known as GARR Network, is based on collaborative research and academic projects among Italian universities, schools, and public research institutions. It consists of a set of telecommunication services, network management services, application, storage, and computing services, as well as all interoperability tools that allow authorized users to communicate with each other (National GARR Network).

Only institutional activities are permitted on the GARR Network!

Key Points of the GARR Policy

The following activities are not permitted on the GARR Network:

• Providing network connectivity or other related services (such as housing, hosting, etc.) to individuals not authorized to access the GARR Network, as well as allowing the transit of data and/or information over the GARR Network between two parties who are both unauthorized (third party routing).
• Using network, storage, or computing resources, connecting equipment, services, or software to the network, or spreading viruses, hoaxes, or other programs in a way that damages, harasses, or disrupts the activities of other people, users, or services available on the GARR Network and its connected networks.
• Creating, transmitting, or storing (unless for research purposes or otherwise in a properly controlled and legal manner) any image, data, or other material that is offensive, defamatory, obscene, indecent, or that undermines human dignity—especially regarding sex, race, or religion.
• Sending unsolicited commercial or advertising material (spamming), or allowing one’s resources to be used by third parties for this activity.
• Damaging, destroying, attempting to access without authorization, or violating the confidentiality of other users’ data, including intercepting or disclosing passwords, private cryptographic keys, and any other “personal data” as defined by privacy protection laws.
• Using GARR resources and tools for primarily commercial purposes, unless such use is residual to institutional activities.
• Carrying out any other activity on the GARR Network that is prohibited by national or international law, regulations, or accepted network usage practices (Netiquette).

Responsibility

The responsibility for the content of material produced and distributed via the network and its services lies with the individuals who produce and distribute it. In the case of minors, responsibility may also extend to those identified by law as their legal guardians.

Authorized Users

All users who are granted access to the GARR Network and its services must be recognized and identifiable. Therefore, all measures must be taken to prevent access by unidentified users.

Typically, users must be employees (even temporarily) of an Authorized Organization (AO) with GARR access.
For AOs, users may also include individuals temporarily authorized through an employment relationship for institutional purposes. Students who are officially enrolled in a course at an AO with GARR Network access are also eligible users.
